ISTM #64: An Open Letter to Joe Biden
Dear Mr. President:
I have long admired you and was so happy and relieved four years ago when over 80 million American voters chose you to replace that lying felon. Your presidency has restored stability and credibility.
Your accomplishments include:
--Repairing Infrastructure. You spearhead over $50 billion dollars in repairing and modernizing rail systems, bridges, roads, substandard housing,
--Beating Covid. While Trump falsely eschewed vaccines and masks, you championed them and spearheaded the free vaccine program, saving many lives, and making it safe to eliminate quarantines.
--Climate Change. It is beyond debate that you have done more to fight climate change than any president in history. Your efforts have set ambitious but realistic goals for reducing greenhouse gases. You have championed EVs and Clean Air manufacturing which have boomed under your tenure.
--Improved Human Conditions. You mustered up bipartisan for a program
to reduce gun violence. You significantly improved Medicare for seniors and created programs to reduce child poverty.--Supported fights for freedom. While Trump became pals with Vladimir Putin, you have helped Ukraine in its valiant fight for freedom.
While achieving all this, your opponent was found guilty of 34 felonies not counting several charges of attempting to tamper with election results and various unsavory practices.
Declining Polls
You would think your reelection would be a slam dunk—but it is not, particularly with younger voters and minorities. Recent polls show only 33 percent of voters under 40 would vote for you. It’s even worse with voters between 18 and 29, with only 24 percent, and nearly two-thirds of them have an unfavorable opinion of you.
Trump now leads you in polls by 6 percent, according to the NY Times—and the trend is going against you. According to a CBS News/YouGov poll 72 percent of respondents don’t believe you have the cognitive capacity to continue serving as president.
You’re doing even worse with black voters, where only 33 percent support you. Perhaps even worse, you are now trailing in Arizona, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Nevada—the six states you need to be re-elected.
Everywhere people look, they see cause for alarm. Your recent performances in the Trump debate and your interview with George Stephanopoulos have exacerbated millions of people's fear, uncertainty, and doubts about your cognitive abilities.
I speak for a great many of them when I tell you that while we may admire you, a much higher goal is to stop Trump from returning to a seat of power. We would vote for Attila the Hun than Trump. Personally, I think he belongs in a prison cell rather than behind that big desk in the White House. prison cell than in the White House.
And, sir, our loyalty to you is not as high as our distaste for your opponent.
Not a Moment to Lose
Mr. President, on Aug. 21, about six weeks from today, the Democratic Convention will nominate a presidential candidate. You can have it if you want it, and everyone knows that you do.
For the good of the country, the world, the environment, and national stability. I ask you to step down and endorse Kamala Harris, the person best suited to carry your goals forward, and there will be fewer legal issues involved in transferring campaign contributions.
Making changes at this late date presents huge challenges. There are logistical issues such as ballot printing deadlines, legally transferring campaign donations from your accounts to her, and I’m sure many other daunting issues.
Mr. President, you have served us well, and I am sure you don’t want to do this. The people closest to you seem to back you still, but the nation's pulse is not quickening in your direction.
History will always remember how you dared to step aside when you did no’s good when you did not want to. You will be remembered with much greater respect than if you ignore the wisdom of the American crowd, and you may be remembered as the old guy who was too stubborn to step down when it was time to do so.
I urge you to act quickly, Mr. President. There really isn’t a moment to lose.
